Caryota zebrina
“Zebra Fishtail Palm”
Natural Habitat: An understory palm from the forest of Torricelli Mountains, West Sepik Provence, Papua New Guinea. It is threatened in its natural habitat, and rare among collectors, even though it is gaining popularity.
Description: An amazing looking palm that is true to its name. The branches have zebra stripes down the length of them. The Zebra Fishtail Palm has the usual fishtail looking leaf, and tends to have a waxy shine. We also have a few in our collection that feature a variegated colored leaf. The palm is slow growing, and few large specimens exist in cultivation.
Environment: Since the Zebra is an understory palm, it requires a lot, if not full shade. It likes moist soil, but keep it well drained since they don’t tolerate soggy roots. It is cold hardy to the low 30’s, and can handle mild frosts with no to minimal damage. There are adult specimen growing in Orlando, FL. Zones 9-11
