Caryota ochlandra

Chinese Fishtail Palm

Natural Habitat:  This palm is naturally found throughout the open forest of Canton, China.

Description:  A medium sized, solitary fishtail palm that can reach heights over 20 feet tall.  The crownshaft is very long and can sometimes take up 75% of the trees total length.  The long crownshaft gives this tree a very unique, full appearance. The branches run up the tree bottom to top, sometimes hiding the trunk all together.  The leaves are thick and dark green with the standard fishtail shaped leaf.

This palms medium size makes it a great landscape plant, since it will not grow enormous, making it quite a task to be removed at the end of its life.

Environment:  This palm enjoys a sunny, moist and well-drained soil.  It is very cold hardy and can take temperatures into the mid 20s and mild freezes as an adult tree.  Zones 8-11.  As a seedling, make sure to keep the young tree located in a shady moist area.
