Beccariophoenix alfredii
Beccariophoenix alfredii
Natural Habitat: Naturally found in a humid valley on the High Plateau in Madagascar.
Description: A tall solitary palm, similar in appearance to the Beccariophoenix madagascariensis or Coconut Palm. The alfredii can grow very tall, reaching recorded heights over 30 feet tall. It is said to grow even taller than that, but overall height is still being researched. The trunk is light brown, and rigid with noticeable leaf scares left from the old falling leaves. The crownshaft emerges upwards of 20 long pinnate leaves, which are similar in appearance to a Coconut palm. The crownshaft is mostly hidden under the 20 or so yellow leaf bases that hold the large leaves to the palm.
The B. alfredii has recently been discovered, making reliable information on this palm hard to come by. It was once thought to be a variation of the Beccariophoenix madagascariensis, but is now its own species.
Environment: The alfredii enjoys a sunny, moist, and well drained area, where it will have plenty of room to grow. As a seedling, it is easily grown if kept in a shady area, where it can get watered regularly. It is said to be quite cold hardy, handling mild freezes with minimal damage. Zone 9b-11. It ‘s cold hardiness can be attributed to its natural habitat at high elevations, where it gets mild freezes during cold winter nights.
