Calyptrocalyx sp. 'Sanumb'
Calyptrocalyx sp. “Sanumb”
Habitat: The understory rainforest in Papua New Guinea
Description: A described palm that has yet to be given a scientific name. A small clumping understory palm that can reach height around 10 feet tall. The clumps can become very dense, with more then 20 trees growing in one clump, even at a young age (please note the picture in the gallery). The leaves are very variable in shape ranging from an un-divided leaf to a very pinnate leaf. The new leaves emerge in different colors, from light orange to a dark red. These seedlings are the fine leaf species, but have not begun to show the pinnate leaves yet.
Environment: This tree likes a warm sheltered are where it will stay moist. It can take full sun all day, but would prefer a shaded area where it only gets a few hours of full sun a day. It is cold sensitive when young but is said to be more hardy as it ages. Zones 9-10-11. In our experience it handled the winter just fine if kept sheltered.
