Chambeyronia hookerii
Chambeyronia hookeri
“Blond Flamethrower”
Natural Habitat: Naturally found throughout the rainforests in New Caledonia
Description: A tall solitary palm that can reach heights around 30 feet tall. It’s common name, “Blond” from the crownshaft, which is a cream or yellow color. The palm has a nice looking gray trunk with visible leaf scares, left by the self cleaning crownshaft that drops its old leaves as new ones emerge. The new leaves emerge a amazing red or maroon color, that slowly fades to dark green after a few weeks. The leaves are shinny and dark green with a pinnate pattern along the branches.
Some argue that this palm is actually just a variation of the Cham. macrocarpa with a yellow crownshaft. For general purposes it is sold as Cham. hookeri, even though some say it should be properly named Chambeyronia macrocarpa var. hookeri
Environment: The hookeri enjoys a shady moist area, where it will be hidden from direct sun throughout the day. It can handle direct or full sun, but the leaves can become burned, and yellow. This palm is cold hardy to the low 30’s. We had a recent batch of seedlings handle a recent freeze and temperatures down below 30, with minimal damage. As a seedling, they enjoy a shady area where they can get watered regularly.
