Butia capitata
Common Names:
Pindo Palm,
Jelly Palm
Habitat: From the open forest in Brazil, and surrounding countries, usually found in large concentration.
Description: A tall solitary palm that can reach heights over 40 feet. The leaves are variable ranging in both color and shape. The color can vary from blue-to-gray-to-green. The trunks grow thick and carry many leaf scars, usually remaining for much of the trunk.
General: The capitata fruits regularly through the year. The fruits are used both in local cuisine and in jelly making, hence the common name. From personal experience they smell and kind of taste like peaches. This palm is also very receptive to hybridizing. Two known species; both the Syagrus romanzoffiana and Jubaea chilensis, can be hybridized with the capitata. The hybrids are highly sought after and hard to come by.
Environment: The capitata likes a sunny, moist well-drained location. It can take full sun from a very young age
